To visit nearby spots, it is better to go by train. The train runs parallel to parts of Urubamba River. While traveling in train you see many beautiful landscapes. If you can afford, you can visit the nearby sites by helicopter. Helicopter service is available between Machu Picchu- Cusco - Aguas Calientes.

As being at the height of 8,000 feet, Machu Picchu is only reached by train starting from Cuzco or by foot via Inca Trail. No direct flight arrives to Cuzco airport from other countries. Most of Peru flights stop in Lima. So for going to Machu Picchu, it is better if you get a flight for Lima. Lima is well connected with many South American cities. After getting a quick flight of regional carrier, you can land at Velazco Astete Airport of Cuzco. Keep in mind that sometimes Cuzco flights are canceled or delayed due to strong winds.
There are many regional Airlines that operate numerous flights between Cusco and Lima. Tans, Star Up, Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano, Transam Taca Perú, Air Atlantic, Aero Continente are some airlines that operate on CUSCO - LIMA route. LAN and Aero Condor also conduct flights from Cusco to Puno (Juliaca), Puerto Maldonado and Arequipa.
